Council Minutes of 6/5/2001
„~. Limpert, O'Grady and Saringer; Safety Director Jenkins. Mrs. Sorge is a 15-year plus
resident of North Olmsted who is currently employed at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation
as a communications specialist. She also has experience in accounting and long-term
budget planning. It was felt that her experience and professionalism, as well as being a
long-term resident and her devotion to athletic interests in the city, would make her an
ideal candidate for this position. The committee recommended approval of her
appointment. Mr. Miller made a motion to approve the appointment of Sandy Sorge to a
position on the North Olmsted Parks and Recreation Commission. The motion was
seconded by Mr. Nashar and passed unanimously.
Councilman O'Grady, chairperson of the Public Safety, Health & Welfare Committee: 1)
The committee met on May 22. Present were committee members O'Grady, Limpert and
Kesler; Council members Dailey, Miller, Nashar and McKay; Safety Director Jenkins;
residents from the Pine School PTA and Pine School area residents. Agenda items:
• A liquor license transfer from Frank Cisterino, DBA Lorain Claque Shell at 23385
Lorain Road to True North Energy LLC, DBA True North #410, 23385 Lorain Road.
This is a C 1, C2 license, and the committee unanimously recommended approval.
Mr. O'Grady moved to approve the transfer; the motion was seconded by Mr. Nashar.
Roll call: O'Grady, yes; Nashar, yes; Miller, no; McKay, no; Limpert, yes; Kesler,
yes; Dailey, yes. The motion passed with five yeas and two nays.
• Ordinance 2001-55, sponsored by Mrs. Kesler. The ordinance amends the Traffic
Control File of the City of North Olmsted by relocating and modifying the language
on two `~To Parking, Stopping or Standing" signs on the south side of Sweetbrier
Drive to read `2To Parking, Stopping or Standing 7:30 to 9 a.m, 2:30 to 4 p.m,
school days" and declaring an emergency as amended. Changes were suggested by
Mrs. Kesler and were unanimously approved by the committee. Mr. Limpert
commented that the ordinance gives him concerns for the safety of area children. As
the Ward 1 Councilman, he asked that the ordinance not be approved. Mrs. Kesler
stated that she too is concerned with safety, but the ordmance moves the signs and the
hours are reasonable. Mr. O'Grady commented that this ordinance will create a safety
hazard for area children where none existed before by allowing cars to park
immediately adjacent to the crosswalk all summer long, during all hours on weekends
and during most daylight hours on school days. Resident Mrs. Follen asked if the city
was concerned with the potential for lawsuits if this ordinance was passed and an
accident should occur. Mr. Miller responded that the city would have no liability
since were are following the law. Resident Mr. Kelly brought up the issue of
crosswalks on Dover Center and Canterbury. Resident Mrs. Fox commented that this
is an issue of safety versus convenience. In response to a comment that there wasn't
room for a car to park immediately adjacent to the crosswalk, she stated that there
was room and that she had tested this by parking her car there. Further, cars parked
on both sides of the crosswalk made good sense from a convenience standpoint, but
bad sense from a safety Sandpoint. She asked Council to make safety the priority.
Resident Mrs. Weir suggested the drivers go to the Pine School administrators to find
solutions to parking in the Pine parking lot. Resident Mrs. Deis, commented on the
need to further expand the safety zone so as to eliminate turn-arounds in driveways.
4
