Council Minutes of 12/3/2002
2) The advertisement for bids on the new North Olmsted library project were published
on Friday, November 29, and will be published again on December 6. The bids will be
opened on December 20.
3) The Service Department once again successfully handled the recent snowfall.
4) With the assistance of Bob Nichols, Superintendent of the Wastewater Treatment
Plant, the Director of Public Service was able to make modifications to the 2003 annual
budget by deleting a capital purchase item.
5) Before Council is an ordinance to authorize a fourth Service employee to be put onto
the sewer crew, thereby calling back one of the Service employee's layoffs, should
Council so approve this legislation prior to 12/31/02.
6) Sad to report two retirements: Larry Griffith, Assistant City Engineer, retired on
11/29/02; Paul Deichmann, City Engineer, notified the Director of Public Service of his
retirement effective 12/31/02. Both of these individuals have been an asset to the City of
North Olmsted and will be difficult to replace, particulazly Paul Deichmann whose
knowledge and expertise has allowed the City of North Olmsted to accomplish with
success many capital improvement projects.
7) The grand opening of the RTA North Olmsted Pazk-and-Ride is scheduled for
Monday, 12/9!02, at 11 a.m. The lot has been a major success with capacity in excess of
200 vehicles, and the NOMBL employees have been very efficiently providing a great
service to the ridership of the city and RTA.
8) Compliments to the Service employees on the beautiful job they did on the holiday
lights in front of City Hall on the landscaping. The annual tree lighting ceremony was
held yesterday with a visit from Santa. Thank you to the Deerfield development
homeowners volunteers for their talents in decorating the tree and wreath for the lobby.
Thanks also to the Chestnut School choir under Ms. Kilbane for their beautiful singing
and the members of the North Olmsted Orchestra brass section directed by Came
Whitehouse, for their holiday music. Thank you to the volunteers for setting up and
cleaning up after the event. The event was very successful-a family fun, festive
celebration.
9) Yesterday a meeting was held with union representatives and staff representatives
discussing the situation in North Olmsted, the General Fund in general, also discussed
were various aspects involving the deficit of the city.
Councilman Nashaz:
^ Thanks to Paul Deichmann and Larry Griffith for their service to the city. They
always provided dependable advice, and they will be missed.
• He received a call from a resident who often uses the facilities at the Recreation
Center and who is concerned about the conditions of the facility. In addition, his
wallet was stolen from a locker. When the gentleman reported the theft, he was told
that this was not an unusual event. This security problem needs to be addressed.
Councilwoman Kasler questioned the Mayor as to whether any disciplinary action had
been taken with regazd to the Safety Director's comments that he never saw the memo
about inquiries from the media. At the time, the Mayor said the memo was "bogus."
Mayor Musial said no action had been taken. Mrs. Kasler noted that inconsistencies have
arisen regarding that topic and the memo since the last Council meeting. Safety Director
2
