Council Minutes 6117/2~U3
Boulevard. The motion was seconded by Councilman Nashar and passed
~p,w unanimously.
Councilman Dailey, Council's representative to the Landmazks Commission: 1) On
Monday, June 9, the Landmarks Commission met for its monthly meeting. An area of
concern to its members was brought up by member Paul Barker with the request that Mr.
Dailey report out on it at this evening's meeting. As of Monday, June 9, Councilman
Miller had made at least four requests of the administration to help locate the foundation
sandstones that were part of the old residences that were torn down on the location of the
new library. Mr. Barker then referred back to the minutes of the Landmarks
Commission's November 11, 2002 meeting where the issue regarding the foundations
sandstones was discussed and their use at the new library location was also discussed.
Mr. Barker reported to the commission the discussion shared between himself and
Councilman Miller. Mr. Miller stated that, in discussion with Safety Director Jesse, Mr.
Jesse indicated that there may have been an asbestos problem with the foundation stones
and that this may be the reasons why the foundation stones were removed from the job
site. Through reseazch of his own, Mr. Barker found that the stones have been checked
for asbestos, they were then washed and ready to use at the new North Olmsted library
location. On behalf of the Landmarks Commission, Mr. Dailey asked the following
questions of the administration: What happened to the foundation stones that were to be
part of the new library? Were they inadvertently hauled away by an excavation
company, misplaced or were they stolen from the job site? Mayor Musial answered that
the stones are in the back of Canepa home. Also, the stones that aze part of the Canepa
home cannot be removed as the home is being utilized as a construction trailer to
maintain the blueprints and things of that nature.
Mrs. Kasler asked if the stones being discussed were the foundations stones that were
taken from the homes that were tom down and were to be used at the library site. She
wondered if they were all accounted for. Mayor Musial said that was correct, and the
stones in the Canepa home will be extracted when the home is demolished. There is a
large pile of heavy stones, but he cannot say that every single one is there.
2) The Landmarks Commission also discussed the potential destruction of one of the last
historical landmarks along Lorain Road, the building at the comer of Porter and Lorain
that currently houses Rebecca's Flowers. It was understood that Halleen has purchased
this building with plans for its demolition. The commission is against its destruction and
encourages those interested in preserving North Olmsted's history in more than just
photos to get involved in trying to save this building.
Councilman Gareau said it was his understanding that Mr. Halleen had made application
for a demolition permit. There may also be matters pending before boazds and
commissions, and he believes Mr. Halleen previously went before the Planning
Commission with a proposal to remove the buildings and pave the parcels to park cars.
He is greatly disappointed. Mrs. Kasler said she too was disappointed and wondered
whether it had been determined if that corner, and particularly Rebecca's Flowers, was
part of the historical district. Also, she wondered who in the city represents our interests
10
