Council Minutes 6/17/2003
,,, Mr. Gareau noted that Mr. Barker's point that the issue won't turn within the Landmarks
Commission is true. What is ultimately done with that particular property will be
decided by the BZA. Because, if Mr. Halleen is planning on using it as a display azea, he
is going to need several variances. He hopes that the residents who aze concerned,
especially those who live on Dewey Road, will come to the BZA meeting and speak their
mind. Mr. Barker agreed and noted that the Landmarks Commission has discussed
getting space in the city Homecoming tent to give a history and presentation on that
building in order to make the citizens more aware of the situation. Mr. Dailey said he
believed the Dewey Road residents will attend the meeting. We should remember this is
a city issue. As we lose these buildings, they don't come back. If we lose this one, we
have lost everything in that azea and it would be a shame for the community.
Councilman Gareau, member of the Recreation Commission: 1) The Recreation
Commission met on June 2, 2003 at the North Olmsted Recreation Center administrative
office. Discussion items were as follows:
^ The Recreation Commissioner reported that full-time staffing is now taking place at
the ticket booth and reception desk. Mr. DiSalvo has actually been able to cover a
greater portion of the day with less people than he was using before. The staff was
actually reduced from 13 persons to 6, but more man hours are being worked with
less people. The fragmented work shifts have been changed to standard work shifts.
Mr. DiSalvo reported that this has become a more efficient operation and insures
greater public service to the community.
^ Park concessions were discussed and have gone back to the drawing boazd as no
business has bid on the job. For the past several years, Angelina's Pizza has offered
concessions at the park. They've elected not to do it this particular summer. Mr.
DiSalvo is working on this problem.
^ Mr. DiSalvo reported that the ice show was a success. About one hundred people
were in the show, and he was very appreciative of everyone's effort.
^ Mr. DiSalvo noted there will be family entertainment in North Olmsted Park with
Thursday night movies and Sunday night music.
^ There was a printing error in the spring Recreation brochure with the deadline for
registration having been passed before the brochure was distributed. Mr. DiSalvo
pointed out that standard language was used, but the printing schedule had changed.
He is now acutely awaze of that problem, and they will make sure that it doesn't
happen with the fall brochure.
^ Two sub-committees of the Recreation Commission are hard at work studying two
very interesting issues. The first one is a discussion on public usage of different
parts of the Rec Center, particularly the multi-purpose room, the pool meeting room,
ice skating room and the lobby azea. There is currently no policy in place regarding
public usage of any of these areas. The other issue is a discount rate that is typically
offered to employees of the City of North Olmsted, known as the We Caze program.
It does allow for discounted programs by employees and their families. It does
extend itself actually to all employees, City Council and members of boards and
commissions and their families. Benefits include free admission to open skate and
open swim, 20% discount on various programs, $1 offtennis court rentals and a 20%
12
