Council Minutes of 6/3/2003
,,,ti•" dedication to the program was very evident. Congratulations to you and all the Recreation
employees for a job well done." 2) A letter from a resident regazding an accident that
accurred on May 1 in the Deepwoods neighborhood: "Dear Mayor, I'm writing to commend
you on North Olmsted's outstanding Fire Department, our paramedics, the Police Dept. and
all the other support personnel who responded to an accident that occurred this past
Thursday, May 1, in my neighborhood. Sadly, a neighbor down the street had a heart attack
or some other medical event and ran his caz off the street, across my lawn and into my next
door neighbor's house. Within five minutes, 10 squad cars were on my street. Soon after,
two fire engines arrived as well as the paramedics. I was the first person on the accident
scene and, because of the emotion of the event, I failed to get the names of all the truly great
men who professionally responded to this accident and were so personally kind and friendly
to me. These men included, among others, the courteous police officer who was the first to
talk to the accident victim and the one who took a statement from me, the amazing
paramedics who extricated the victim from the car, the officer wha coordinated the entire
accident scene and the outstanding firemen, most notably Scatty and the fire truck driver
whose name, I regret, escapes me. These guys epitomize professionalism. Moreover, they
were compassionate, kind, concerned, respectful and most appreciative of anything anyone
did for them. I doubt that most citizens of our fine community realize what a tremendous
safety force we have. These humble men put their lives on the line each day they can never
be thanked enough nor can they be compensated enough. Please know that my wife and I
truly appreciate their goodness and self-sacrifice. On a personal note, let me tell you that I
have been a theology teacher at St. Ignatius High School since 1970 and the author of over
30 religious education books for adults and adolescents. My school aspires to graduate men
far others, who dedicate their lives to the welfare of others. Our North Olmsted safety forces
exemplify in the best way the meaning of service. They are, to a person, men for others. On
Friday when I returned to school, I told my senior and juniors about the outstanding men I
had the privilege to meet on Thursday. I told them that ow North Olmsted policemen,
firemen and paramedics are the kind of persons they should aspire to be. We are truly
fortunate to live in this community. I cannot imagine a better safety force anywhere in this
country. May Gad bless you and our humbly, caring and remarkable police and firemen.
Sincerely yours, Mike Pennock, Ph.D., St. Ignatius High School."
Patricia Deis, 26893 Sweetbriar, said she had been stationed at the Rec Center this past
Satwday with the recall petition. She inquired of Safety Director Jesse who had asked him to
interfere with her presence at the Rec Center and to remove the recall sign from the center
property. Mr. Jesse said, Mr. I}iSalvo, the Recreation Commissioner, had asked him about
the fact that a committee from Recall Musial.com was there obtaining signatures and there
was a sign that was placed apparently in the shrub beds. Mr. DiSalvo said he had taken the
action to ask that the sign be removed, but they would be able to continue to express their
views as far as the recall petitioning. Mrs. Deis said she did not agree with that explanation.
In fact, one person signed the recall petition because of the scene that was caused
unnecessarily by the Rec Center employee. She asked him more than once, and he
repeatedly said that Mr. Jesse had given the order to do it. He said he had no control over it
and was following Mr. Jesse's instructions. Mrs. Deis noted that she and her sign peacefully
stayed all day at the Community Cabin on election day with no interference. She believes
she has the absolute right to appear with a sign on any property owned and operated by the
city for the benefit of its citizens as long as she does not impede the flow of traffic, obstruct
the egress to the facility and does not contribute in any way to compromising the health or
11
