Council Minutes of May 20, 2003
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr. Pierce offered congratulations to Eagle Scout Don
Brisbine who also is a SITES student. Mr. Pierce said they had come to the meeting to
show what the students of North Olmsted have been involved in this year. It is a concrete
manifestation of their efforts and achievements. He was sorry that Mrs. Kasler was not
present because the SITES program has reached marvelous heights, and she was very
instrumental from the beginning of the SITES program and has remained very supportive
of the program. The program is concluding its 12~' year with another marvelous set of
students. This week is very special as they have the privilege of making this presentation
in their home community and will travel to Columbus tomorrow to speak to the Ohio
Legislature. Also, several of the students spent the day at Case Western Reserve
testifying before the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community
Service. Mrs. Christine Kilbane-Pierce was introduced to continue to presentation. Mrs.
Pierce said that one of the main focuses this year, besides the regular service to the
community, was to celebrate Ohio's Bicentennial. To do this, they partnered with the
Ohio Department of Education, the John Glenn Institute for Public Service and Public
Policy and the Kellogg Foundation who provided grant money. These students acted as
the coordinators of the project which celebrated Ohio's Bicentennial by asking schools
around the State to join in three different service learning projects: One, to celebrate
Ohio's past. The results of that will be filing interviews with senior citizens and other
important people in communities. A written record by Ohio school students will be
published at the end of the summer. Second, to enrich the present. After community
needs, many schools targeted an issue that the students felt they could address and do
something to improve their communities and counties. Third, to leave a legacy for the
future. Students from K-12 participated in various activities within their counties. As
part of the project, schools from across the State were asked to submit a quilt square
which illustrated something significant or historical about their county. (Students
displayed the quilt.) The quilt will be presented tomorrow to the Ohio Legislature with
other schools who have been participants in it. Each square represents a different county
and the Ohio stars were made by the Family and Consumer Science students. The quilt
squares are remarkable, and each one tells a story about our State.
President O'Grady presented each student with a congratulatory letter recognizing their
accomplishments as members of the SITES program and for their participation in "The
Ohio Bicentennial Service-Learning Schools Project."
President O'Grady announced that the Veterans of Foreign Wars will sponsor Memorial
Day activities on Monday, May 26, beginning at 8 a.m. at Old Town Hall with the flag
raising. That ceremony will be duplicated at the two cemeteries in the city. The
activities will culminate with a ceremony at 11 a.m. at North Olmsted Park, and all are
welcome to attend.
REPORTS
Mayor Musial: 1) The Pine School DARE graduation was held on May 13. Other
graduations are May 21 at Chestnut School and May 22 at St. Brendan's School. All are
welcome to attend.
2
