Council Minutes of 5/7/2003
commission noted that the center expected to receive about $4,800 this year from the
current video games, even though they are substandard and include some games that
are fairly old. Mr. Iafelice indicated that he thinks the future of the industry is one
getting away from video games since most kids can play them at home. He believes
that it will probably lean toward what he called games of redemption. Games of
redemption are skill games with prizes. He indicated that he expected the center
could see a three to four hundred percent increase in revenue with a rotation of the
stock and bringing in some new games. Mr. Iafelice's company works in several
communities, and he has serviced ow Rec Center since it opened. There is no current
contract in place, and legislation will be introduced either for bids or proposals under
the revenue-generating contract provision. All commission members agreed that
anything would be an improvement, and they would like to see additional revenue
given the fact that there are many needs at the Rec Center.
As another revenue source, Councilman Miller suggested that the Recreation
Commission look into the possibility of providing coin/currency operated computers for
access to the Internet, with proper safeguards in place.
Councilwoman Kasler questioned why the area at Springvale had been rejected as a site
for tennis courts. Councilman Gareau said he believed there was a parking problem and
it may interfere with the driving range. However, there is a lot of space there and it is a
site to be considered in the future.
Councilman Gareau paid tribute to former City Council member and community
volunteer, Mr. Fred Hatton, who recently passed away. Mr. Hatton was a former Citizen
of the Year and was a very active member of the community. His family will be kept in
everyone's thoughts and prayers.
LETTERS/COMMUNICATIONS
A letter from Walter G. Viergutz was read. Mr. Viergutz expressed disappointment that
two members of the audience at the meeting of April 15, 2003 did not remove their hats
during the Pledge of Allegiance. He suggested that such behavior not be allowed in the
future and that the Council President had the authority to admonish individuals acting in
such a manner.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
Laurie Davis, 4914 Hampton Drive.
^ Spoke on behalf of seniors who enjoy the activities at the Senior Center. Many of the
seniors have signed a petition to ask that Service Department employee, Dave
Dunlap, who has been providing custodial and janitorial services at the Senior Center
be retained. Mr. Dunlap has been providing services above and beyond the call of
duty. At this time, he is the only person able to use the defibrillator. Mr. Dunlap has
been a wonderful addition to the staff, and the seniors do not want to lose him.
10
