Council Minutes of 5/17/2005
• Attended a meeting of the Faith Communities Forum.
• Presented a proclamation to Father Bob Stec, who has previously served an associate
pastor at St. Richard's Parish. Father Stec was honored this year as the Knights of
Columbus Catholic Man of the Year. Councilman McKay also attended the
celebration.
• Represented the City of North Olmsted at the NOCOP board meeting where the
discussion included a proposal to retain Mr. Don Copeland as apart-time Executive
Director of NOCOP.
• Attended an art show at Chestnut Intermediate School, and the conference track
championships at the newly repaired NOHS track.
5. Week of May 16:
• Observed as Council met to consider a number of appointments, to include the
appointment of a new member of Council. Thanks to Council for their speedy action
on the appointments that he sent to them.
• Met today with leadership of the Police and Fire departments to discuss issues in their
areas of responsibility. Chaired a Board of Control and Director's meeting this
morning.
• Pleased to report that the walking path has been completed at Clague Park. This is a
major improvement to that facility.
• Disappointing to report that the North Olmsted Recreation Center pool has been
temporarily closed due to concerns about the structural integrity of a main support
beam in the ceiling. Hopefixlly, the results of the study will be received by the end of
the week and will then be presented to Council.
• The Fire Station #2 project is progressing with final review of architectural firms.
Our review team will present their top three recommendations to the Board of
Control in the coming week.
• In the Building Dept., we are interviewing for the position of part-time maintenance
inspector. That will be concluded this week. We are also looking at other changes to
the property maintenance program in our city based heavily on the model used by
Fairview Park.
• The city property on Butternut Ridge Road is undergoing a major renovation with the
idea that we will use that property to host the dispatchers for NOCOP and the
F.I.R.S.T. (First Integrated Regional Senior Transportation) consortium. That is quite
a feather in our cap to have that headquartered in the City of North Olmsted.
Law Director Dubelko: 1) A safe staffing committee meeting in the Fire Dept. was held
on Monday.
2) A second arbitration decision was received on the assortment of fire fighter
management arbitrations that have been pending since last fall. The second arbitration
award has also gone against the city. He had indicated to the administration and also
indicated to the union that, when a couple of these decisions came back, he was going to
sit down and look thoroughly at where we are and then provide appropriate advice to the
officials on management's side. The first decision came back on February 28. If the city
desires to appeal it to Common Pleas Court, it has until May 28 to do so. We have not yet
made a decision. He has had meetings with the Mayor, the city's labor attorney and
others to discuss whether or not the city should go forward and appeal the first award
and, in addition, to consider appealing the second award. The decision will be made
3
