Council Minutes of 9/5/2006
upon to sell only to an owner who will commit to retaining the stores and over 4,000
positions.
5) Council is invited to attend the city's annual employee picnic tomorrow.
6) Departments:
Community Life Services:
• Proceeds from the North Olmsted Night at Jacob's Field fundraiser and some
funds from the 2006 Mayor's Ball were combined to make a donation of $1,000
to the USO presented at Homecoming. The money will be used to purchase
phone cards for our service members overseas.
• Before Council this evening is legislation that will authorize the hiring of an
outside concessions vendor for Recreation.
• Senior Center will hold a lifeline screening in the Cabin on November 29.
Screening for strokes, aneurysm, osteoporosis, and peripheral arterial disease will
cost $45 each or can be bundled. The screenings are open to any North Olmsted
resident regardless of age. Contact the Senior Center for information.
Human Resources:
• Conducted background checks and drug tests for the first time for 17 volunteer
coaches of recreation programs.
• Have received seven proposals in response to our RFP for a labor negotiator, and
those are being reviewed.
• Installed new Rec Trac software on the server and on nine workstations at the
Recreation Center, and will be wiring the front desk later this week to incorporate
that new technology. The software will provide the necessary technology and
equipment to issue new ID cards. Information Technology, Human Resources
and Recreation Departments are working together on this issue.
Planning:
• A community design workshop for the Crocker/Steams corridor plan is scheduled
for Wednesday, September 20, at 7 p.m. in Springvale's Ballroom. All members
of Council are welcome to attend. Our consultant and members of the project's
steering committee will facilitate small group discussions on possible design
scenarios and development alternatives for the corridor. All property owners in
and around the corridor will be invited to attend.
Safety:
• Fire fighters from North Olmsted and neighboring communities conducted high-
rise training this past month. The training included high-rise scenario operations
at the Victoria Plaza building. North Olmsted fire fighters assisted Olmsted
Township on a structure fire on August 22 and Rocky River on August 31.
• Members of our HAZMAT team participated in a full-scale exercise conducted in
several locations throughout the county on August 26. The drill was a joint
venture between Cuyahoga County and the Dept. of Homeland Security which
was designed primarily to test the interoperability of our communications
systems.
Service
• Though we have construction scheduled for next spring on the I-480 overpass on
Stearns Road to be done in conjunction with the new Crocker/Steams extension,
the disintegration of the center island has become a safety concern.
