Council Minutes of 6/20/2006
Commissioners, the County Department of Family and Human Resources, and the Ohio
Department of Jobs and Family Services. Special thanks to the Rev. Father Neil
Kakoothe, pastor at St. Clarence, who generously donated the parish hall. Recognition to
Director of Community Life Services John Dailey for the outstanding job he did putting
this together. The event was very gratifying on one hand, but also it brought home just
how sad the conditions are. In our city we have good people from good families who
have lost good jobs.
3) Fourth of July ceremonies will begin with the youth bike parade from the city parking
lot over to North Olmsted Park. At the park, there will be a brief ceremony and then the
picnic in the park will begin.
4) Regarding the front entrance project, if this project is killed at this late date, it is an
incredible disservice to our citizens. The City of North Olmsted, with the cooperation of
City Council, has invested well over $50,000 in this project thus far. If the project is
terminated, that money cannot be recouped. There have been comments made that
Council wasn't aware of the cost, which was a surprise to the administration. On June
28, 2005, he sent an e-mail to Council saying the most recent project, "...will be
between two hundred and three hundred thousand dollars." The final bid price is on the
order of two hundred and sixty-six thousand dollars. Comments were made that Council
wasn't aware of the scope of the project. On August 30, 2005, Council adopted
Resolution 2005-117 which specifically went through the expansion of this project to
include the work on the second floor. We need a larger caucus room. If people can't get
inside, we don't have open government. We need ADA access to City Hall. There is no
question that this project is worthy, and it needs to be done. At this late date, there is no
reason for it to be terminated.
5) He recently attended the United States Conference of Mayors, a gathering of 200
mayors from every major city in the continental United States and beyond. He attended
numerous workshops on issues such as Tasers, community development and housing and
eminent domain. As a member, he attended the standing committee of international
affairs. At that meeting, he co-sponsored with other mayors legislation and took part in
discussions with representative organizations that will expand the influence of the City of
North Olmsted, not just regionally and not just nationally but internationally-contacts in
both Asia and Europe.
6) Cleveland Indians tickets are available for North Olmsted Night at Jacob's Field on
August 10 v. the Angels. Ticket price is the face value $14, and the city will receive $4
back from each ticket which will be donated to the USO for the benefit of the men and
women who are serving in our nation's military.
7) The Recreation Master Plan had a targeted focus group on June 15. Valuable
information was obtained, and that process will continue.
8) On June 16, the Planning Director attended the annual Cuyahoga County Department
of Development Municipal Grant Seminar and received information on the format and
the priorities for the Community Development Block Grant program. There will be new
formats for the exterior maintenance program. The Community Development Block
Grant Citizens Advisory Committee begins its work next month.
9) Effective June 15, the Division of Youth Services was transferred to the Safety
Department and will soon move its office to the Police Department. Thanks to City

2
