Council Minutes of 11/7/2007

stretching, with all adults in the shallow and deep, splitting the pool in half. Within the
last year, we have been squashed into 1/3 of the pool while children's swimming classes
are going on with the voice level so high it is hard to hear our instructor calling out the
strokes. But the fun does not stop there; our class was shortened to 45 minutes
eliminating the on deck pool stretches. NOW, the Recreation Director, Ted DiSalvo and
Recreation Center Pool Manager, Cindy Bartko, are squeezing us out of the pool from
November 1 to February 10 for the non taxpaying Fairview Park Swim Team. We have
no problem offering our youth a positive program at our pool; however, zero
consideration was made around our little 45 minute class. No thought of our class was
given for an alternative, possibly at another recreation center for resident prices; it was
just "goodbye." Would it have been that much of a problem to accommodate Fairview
Park after our class? We are the incumbents and we should have been considered long
before the outsiders taking over our facility. Maybe Mr. DiSalvo has plans to ask this
swim team for a tax increase when renovating the recreation center! The Aqua Aerobics
Evening Swim Class: Ellen M. Hoelter, Sandra L. Hardy, May Ratcliffe, Thomas Svetz,
Joanne Botson, Brigid Ratcliffe, Sara Cooley, Anna Ho."
Mayor O'Grady commented that change is difficult for all of us, but sometimes change is
necessary.
Community Life Services Director Dailey came forward and said there have been
arrangements with an area rec facility. The people who were in the class are actually
getting a rate that is lower than what they were being charged at North Olmsted Rec
Center to continue out the program. The money being generated by the Fairview Park
team is far and away a lot more than from the water aerobics program for the short period
of time that it is being eliminated. Knowing that down the road we might have some sort
of changes with our own recreation center, it would be a good opportunity for us to work
with the Fairview Park people in the event we need to use their facility in the future.
Councilman Barker said he would bring this issue into a Recreation Committee meeting.
Councilman Miller asked was the water aerobics group given an alternate time? Mr.
Dailey said it was not a real productive program for them to offer as a recreation center.
It had been decreasing in size. It was not given any alternative at this point in time.
There just wasn't anything else on the schedule.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
Dennis Lambert, 25057 Carey Lane, questioned whether the city had building code
regulations regarding commercial parking lots. He observed the expansion work on the
RTA Park-n-Ride and it looked like the concrete thickness of the parking lot was only
about 3 '/2 to 4 inches thick. He was required to put in a 6 inch driveway apron to meet
code, and he is concerned that the RTA lot will not hold up under the vehicle and bus
usage.
9
