Council Minutes of 5/15/2007 <br />4) Today is Peace Officer Memorial Day. City flags are flown at half staff. Just as we <br />remember those who are serving in our armed forces, let's not forget our hometown <br />heroes, our outstanding police officers and fire fighters. <br />5) The city offered tax preparation assistance through the AARP and the Senior Center, <br />and we did exceed last year with the number of processed returns. <br />6) Anyone interested in assisting in the first Fairview Park/North Olmsted Relay for Life <br />to benefit the American Cancer Society can contact Director Dailey or North Olmsted <br />chairperson Melissa Meredith. We are seeking volunteers, sponsors, and teams to walk <br />in the event which will be held on June 23 and 24. <br />7) Thanks to those elected officials who joined him in supporting the Mother's Day <br />brunch at Springvale. It was an outstanding event with both Beatings being sold out and <br />about 450 guests were served. <br />8) North Olmsted Recreation Center will host its annual ice show Friday and Saturday <br />evenings at 8 p.m. There will also be matinee shows at 2 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. on <br />Sunday. As a reminder, the ice will be brought down for repairs of the ice rink after this <br />event. <br />9) Assistant Fire Chief written examination was conducted on Saturday, May 12, with 13 <br />fire fighters taking the exam. Test results will be provided on Monday, May 21, with the <br />top 4 candidates moving on to the oral assessment on June 12. <br />10) Congratulations to North Olmsted Fire Dept. Lt. Ken Hehnen who was graduated on <br />May 11 from the Ohio Fire Executive Program. Lt. Hehnen was one of only 18 to be <br />graduated in this fifth graduation class in the State of Ohio. <br />11) We will have a we-share disaster exercise this Sunday at the Great Northern Mall at 9 <br />p.m. Several fire departments from throughout the region will be participating along with <br />North Olmsted. <br />12) We are looking for golfers and hole sponsors for the upcoming golf outing for <br />DARE. The outing is scheduled for June 15 at Springvale Golf Course. If interested in <br />supporting that fine program, please let us know. <br />13) Concrete slab repair is proceeding and nearing completion in Wedgewood and the <br />remaining asphalt overlay streets are to be prepped. After that, we'll begin spot repairing <br />and concrete spot repairs around the city. <br />14) Paint striping contract was awarded to Dura Mark, and the pre-construction meeting <br />was held. This will be a more complete painting of the city streets than in previous years. <br />15) Crack sealing bids are back, and the contract should be awarded by the Board of <br />Control tomorrow. <br />16) Currently, bid packages for the street asphalt overlays and recycling are available to <br />be picked up in the Service Department. <br />17) Stearns Road construction continues with the continuing work on the storm sewers. <br />That portion of the project should be done by the end of the year. <br />18) Work continues on Great Northern Blvd. We encourage all who are able to avoid <br />this area until the work is completed, which is scheduled for late July. <br />19) With regard to legislation, Council has Ordinance 2007-50 before them. This <br />ordinance was reviewed in committee and unanimously recommended for non-passage. <br />He now encourages the rest of Council to follow the committee recommendation and <br />reject this effort at legislative control of administrative functions.
