Council Minutes of 12/16/2008 <br />the cooperation of Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Senator George Voinovich, this <br />important roadway was built at no cost to our city taxpayers. <br />2) This year, the Dept. of Community Life Services will again be able to assist many <br />North Olmsted families through our Adopt-a-Family program. Special thanks to <br />Community Life Services Director John Dailey and his secretary Joanne Hanna for her <br />efforts to organize this event that assisted families in need during the Christmas holiday. <br />Congratulations to both of them. <br />3) This past weekend, along with Council President Kennedy and Community Life <br />Services Director Dailey, he attended the regional winter Special Olympics which was <br />hosted at our Recreation Center. Throughout the day, almost 200 athletes with <br />disabilities competed in various ice related contests. We are looking forward to working <br />with the Special Olympics staff so that not only will we host them annually, but will <br />provide a practice learning facility for their programs. <br />4) Recreation Center foreman Tom Stein is retiring at the end of the month after 33 years <br />of service. We wish him well, and we thank him for his many years of service to our <br />community. <br />5) The administration is proud to announce that with our new health care plan for 2009, <br />we have contained the rising cost of health care and are presenting a savings to our <br />taxpayers of approximately $900,000. Thanks and congratulations to Human Resources <br />Director Cheryl Farver for this very impressive accomplishment. <br />6) The Cultural Activities Commission will host the annual two-day holiday festival on <br />December 29 and 30 at Old Town Hall from 7 to 9 p.m. The event features refreshments <br />and a variety of activities. Admission is free. <br />7) The Division of Youth Services celebrated its 30`h anniversary yesterday. This is an <br />outstanding program that does great good in our community and for our young people. <br />Congratulations to Safety Director Lisa Thomas and Youth Services Administrator Chris <br />A11egra for their outstanding work with this program. Thanks to former director Don <br />Copeland and Maryann Pack of his office who were credited with initiating and then <br />getting this great program on line. <br />8) Property Maintenance inspector Bill Minek has announced his retirement. Bill is a <br />spectacular talent who has worked for the city for over 31 years, and he will be missed. <br />9) The city's water study, which was done in coordination with the city of Westlake, has <br />been completed. HNTB, the contractor that did the study, will make a presentation to all <br />of Council on Wednesday, January 14, 2009. <br />10) As a matter of personal privilege, he is proud of his son Pete, a graduate today from <br />the outstanding Parma Hospital paramedic course. Pete served as a fire fighter for four <br />years in the United States Air Force, and he served in the Middle East. Thanks to him <br />and all veterans for their service to our nation. They are American heroes. Thanks to all <br />fire fighters, paramedics, and police officers for their service to our communities. They <br />are the hometown heroes, and he appreciates the good things they do. <br />Law Director Dubelko: 1) At the first meeting in January, will provide Council with his <br />annual report for 2008. <br />2) He hopes that everybody on Council and in the audience has a pleasant holiday season, <br />and his wish for everyone is a better and brighter year in 2009. <br />2 <br />
