Council Minutes 11/5/2008
it is a vast improvement for the citizens of both Fairview Pazk and North Olmsted that
they will be able to get from their homes to Lorain Road and then from Lorain Road to
their businesses downtown. We are very grateful to the RTA for listening. He personally
offers thanks to the members of Council and residents who chose to take part by
attending public hearings or sending letters to the GCRTA.
4. He will be traveling to Europe next week on a mission of peace, at no cost to our
taxpayers. The trip will start with the remembrance of fallen soldiers from WWI. On
Memorial Day and Veterans Day over the past many years, he has read the poem "In
Flanders Fields" by John McCrae, a Canadian doctor who served during WWI. This
year, instead of reading the poem about Flanders Fields, he'll actually be standing in
Flanders Fields. Especially as a retired military officer, he very much looks forward to
that experience. He will be speaking on the issue of peace in Ghent, Belgium
representing North America as one of three mayors who will speak. He will be joined by
mayors from Iraq and the United Kingdom. He will then travel to the Palais des Nations
(United Nations) in Geneva, Switzerland, office to meet with Parliamentarians for non-
nuclear proliferation. He will speak there about that issue and about the importance of
not tazgeting population centers with nuclear weapons. That has been the practice and
that is sadly still the practice in the world today.
5. The city's Veterans' Day ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 11, at North
Olmsted Pazk beginning at 1 pm. This event is open to the public. Please join our local
veterans, students from the Middle School, and our high school band, as we honor all
those who have served so bravely.
6. Departments:
• Our third annual Rake North Olmsted Day in collaboration with North
Olmsted azea Scout Troops, is scheduled for Saturday, November 8.
Anyone willing to rake or seniors and disabled who aze in need of help,
are encouraged to contact our CLS Office.
• The HR department conducted an Employee Health Care and Benefits Fair
on October 30. Medical Mutual of Ohio conducted health screenings for
54 of our employees, which included a cholesterol screening, blood
pressure, height & weight. Those employees were then provided
individual counseling based on the result of the screening. Seventeen
employees completed the online Health Risk Assessment and many other
employees took the instructions with them to do the assessment at home;
90 employees or dependents received flu shots. In addition to health care
providers, we also had local banks, Deferred Compensation and PERS
attend. We received a number of positive comments from the employees
and providers who participated.
• The Ohio Flanning Conference-Cleveland Section will be hosting its 20th
annual Planning & Zoning Workshop on November 14 in Westlake.
Nearly 500 professional planners, local officials, and citizen planners
attend this annual event. Many of the City's Planning & Design
Commission members, BZA members, and staff will be attending. The
Planning Director will be moderating a session called Ask the Expert:
Tools for Community Development, for which Assistant Law Director
Carole Heyward will be part of the speaker panel.
2
