~~
Council Minutes of 6/3/2008
Council Member Dailey Jones, chairperson of the Streets & Transportation Committee:
1) The Streets & Transportation Committee met on Wednesday, May 28. Present were
committee members Jones, Mahoney and Kearney; Council Members Barker and
Gareau; Service Director Limpert; guests Jerry Barrett, Don &. Irma Pangrac, and Jeff
Gallatin from the Westlife newspaper. The Streets & Transportation Committee held a
streets tour with Service Director Limpert. The committee toured streets that are slated
for repair this year, streets that were completed last year, and additional streets that are a
concern. The tour started out on the west side of the city covering Decker, Porter and
Southern, going through Holiy and Aspen and coming up MacKenzie through Forest
Ridge. The Service Director then provided an exclusive look at the Stearns Crocker
extension work north of Lorain where the committee saw the work for the sound walls
started. The bus continued to the Industrial Parkway to view some of the catch basin and
street repair work that was going on in this area, which is still an assessed street. The
tour headed east and went through Forest Ridge to get to Lansing and toured Oring and
Martin. The tour took went thmu~h Lauren Woods on Lisa and Laure11 Lanes and
crossed over through Sandy Ridge to Canterbury where Tallwood was seen. The
committee saw Woodmere and then headed up to see Lebern and then went through
Alexander to W. 230. The bus continued down Lorain Road east and went through
Clague, Grace, Mastick, Columbia and then circled back up through Mitchell and
Westview. The tour dropped off a few people at City Hall, and the committee continued
to view the Barton/Bradley intersection and the Stearns construction and viewed Stearns
south of I-480. The committee looked at some of the street light issues in Bretton Ridge
south and then headed back to City Hall. Thanks to committee members Mahoney and
Kearney and Council Members Barker and Gareau for attending the streets tour which
was held on an off day from usual committee meetings. She knows residents appreciated
the fact that they took time out of their schedules to view firsthand what residents have to
deal with every day, whether the street was LeBern which was supposed. to have beers
completed years ago, Lauren where patches that were put down last year are corning up,
or Decker which has relief coming to it this year. People just want Council to understand
the conditions with which they are living. She found that, while we do have a number of
streets in our city that are in need of repair, we are making progress. That is something to
be proud of especially in light of a reduced number of Service employees working on our
streets every day. Our city has so many great neighborhoods. One could never get the
full appreciation for our city by just driving up and down Lorain, and that is something
that this tour continues to show all of Council. Special thanks to Service Director
Limpert who drove and who answered questions about work that was done or will be
done and about the Service Dept. The time and effort he put forth for this tour was very
much appreciated.
Councilman Orlowski, member of the Public Safety, Health & Welfaze Committee,
reported for chairperson Kearney: 1) The Public Safety Committee met Wednesday,
May 27, 2008 at 6:45 p.m. Present were committee members Kearney, Orlowski and
Mahoney; Councilman Gareau; the Mayor, Safety Director, and Fire Chief Klecan.
Discussed were Ordinances 2008-79 and 2008-82:
10
