A great interest to municipalities is the effort of select retirement funds; to shift
additional costs onto cities. The effort is being vigorously opposed by the Ohio
Municipal League and as of now, has little support in the state legislature.
3) The ADA playground equipment at Barton Bradley Park has been installed. Three
quarters of that funding came from a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural
Resources Natureworks Program. That was applied for in 2008 and awarded this year.
4) The city's broadcast on Wide Open West is now in operation after a correction of
technical difficulties on their end.
5) Everyone is welcome to attend an unveiling ceremony for the North Olmsted Auto
Mile's Streetscape Banners at 10 A.M. this coming Friday in front of the North Olmsted
Porsche dealership. This event recognizes the ongoing partnership between the City
Administration and Council, the schools, and the business community. The art that is
displayed on these banners was created by students at North Olmsted High School.
6) NOACA, the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency, has invited the City of
North Olmsted to participate in a road safety audit program, which will provide studies of
two high accident intersections in the city - Brookpark Road at Great Northern
Boulevard and Lorain Road at Columbia. These studies will be conducted by NOACA
staff at no charge to the city. This can help increase the probability of the city obtaining
Ohio Department of Transportation funding to implement these programs once the city
has the approval from NOACA. It is expected that these studies will be completed by
mid-November.
7) Two North Olmsted police officers, Pat Scullin and Bob Dungan, joined with many
others on assignment in Pittsburgh during the recent G8 Summit. The city of Pittsburgh
provided housing, food, and uniforms for the thousands of officers who participated in
this detail.
8) The North Olmsted firefighters are participating in the Fairview Hospital
Cardiovascular Study along with other west side firefighters to examine lung capacity
and heart strength. This study is sponsored by Fairview Hospital and seeks to determine
if inhaling smoke, particulate matter, or other chemicals as part of fire suppression
activities is related to a build-up along the coronary walls.
9) The Emergency Service Consultants made its opening presentation to the Westshore
Council of Governments this past Monday, kicking off the fire district studies. The cities
were asked to provide data and a timeline for the study. The Department of Public Safety
is now collecting data that the consultants will review.
10) The annual leaf pick-up will begin October 26 in Zone 3 which is generally Ward 3.
The information flyer should be arriving at all city homes very soon.
11) Legislation is before Council today to approve contract agreements with AFSCME
Service and the FOP units. Council wants to take that into committee. However, it
doesn't detract in any way from the spirit of willingness and the willingness to
compromise that was exhibited by these labor unions and by the city Administration
2
