Council Minutes of 5/6/2009 <br />4) The Westshore Council of Governments began interviews last week for firms to study <br />the potential for a Westshore Regional Fire District. These interviews will continue on <br />May 13 at the Westlake Recreation Center. <br />5) Memorial Day ceremonies will be held on Monday, May 25. Following the 10:30 a.m. <br />parade, there will be a dedication of a monument re-naming the flag area of North <br />Olmsted Park as North Olmsted Veterans' Plaza. Thanks to the Veterans of Foreign <br />Wars Post 7647, the Mayor's charity ball, Boss Concrete, Chambers Funeral Homes, and <br />Milano Monuments for their efforts in making this dedication possible. <br />6) The annual North Olmsted Knights of Columbus Night at the Races was held recently <br />to again benefit the Augustine Rainbow summer camp for disadvantaged youth on the <br />near west side of Cleveland. Congratulations to Human Resources Director Cheryl <br />Farver whose horse Grievance won the race. Assistant Law Director Bryan O'Malley's <br />horse Bulldog ran second, and Finance Director Came Copfer's horse Empty Coffers <br />took third place. A worthy event for a very worthy cause. <br />7) This evening he attended at the North Olmsted High School art show, which includes <br />physical and musical art. It was a very impressive display. <br />8) The Senior Center Applebee's fundraiser was a great success this year, generating over <br />$400. Thanks to all who supported that effort. <br />9) This past week a small patch of ice on the ice rink began to melt. The situation will be <br />monitored and repairs will be made as needed. <br />10) On Tuesday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center, a planning meeting will <br />be held for the third annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life . This event will be <br />held on June 20 and 21 at the North Olmsted High School track. To get involved, please <br />contact CLS Director John Dailey. <br />11) A training session on dealing with sexual harassment was conducted by our risk <br />managers on April 23 for all supervisory personnel. <br />12) Four employees will retire from the WWTP by the end of the month. We thank them <br />for their many years of service. <br />13) As part of this administration's active pursuit of green planning initiatives and <br />projects, a new Zoning Code chapter has been drafted and will regulate wind energy <br />conversion systems. The legislation will be introduced at the next Council meeting and <br />subsequently be reviewed by the Planning & Design Commission and then by City <br />Council. <br />14) On May 3, the National Park Service formally approved the city's application as a <br />Certified Local Government. In this capacity, the city will be able to apply for grants for <br />a variety of historic preservation-related activities. Congratulations to the Landmarks <br />Commission for their efforts. <br />15) The Safety Dept. is working closely with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health <br />regarding developments of the H1N1 flu virus. Additionally, a meeting was held with the <br />North Olmsted City Schools to share information and plan strategy should a school <br />closing be required. <br />16) Building permit activity has increased for the month of April. <br />17) The Olmsted Township Fire Dept. is now using radio equipment supplied by North <br />Olmsted in order to maintain communication with Westshore departments. Thanks to <br />Council for approving that transfer of what was surplus equipment for us. <br />2 <br />~~~.,H <br />
