'+~
Council Minutes of 4/7/2009
the smallest there, and at that time he stated funds didn't need to come directly into North
Olmsted for this to be a success. The measure of success is that it improves our
infrastructure, improves the quality of life for our citizens and puts our people back to
work. North Olmsted recently was awarded through the Byrne Memorial Justice
Assistance Grant (JAG) program, federal stimulus dollars in the amount of $100,000.
These funds will be used within our North Olmsted Police Department to improve the
communications systems. Additionally, we continue to work very aggressively with our
elected officials in Columbus, our state representative, state senator. We're in contact
with the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency. The vast majority of federal
stimulus dollazs for infrastructure have been awazded by the state. But other pools of this
money are sent out to a local coordinating agency. He is on the board of NOACA, and
we are in very close contact with NOACA to continue to try to find more dollars to bring
into North Olmsted for our citizens. He was on the phone twice last week with
Congressman Kucinich regarding our projects requesting federal set-asides both to help
in our portion of the Dover Center Road reconstruction and for the reconstruction of the
industrial parkway on the west side of town. These aze placed very highly on his list of
federal set-asides. Thanks to all of our directors who have been very diligent in these
efforts, but specifically Director Limpert, Director Wenger, and Director Thomas for
their efforts and successes they brought to North Olmsted.
5) The improved city website has resulted in increased traffic as residents aze realizing
not only can they gain a great deal of information off our site, but they can even request
forms and file forms. The improved site has been a great success. The cable channel has
improved as well. We are using better technology. We're rotating through as we take the
old data, and we're putting it on to new and better slides. Also, for the first time have the
ability to specifically schedule when particulaz events can be shown.
6) The city has received a grant in the amount of $3,500 from the Cuyahoga County Solid
Waste District to promote recycling efforts in our community. Work is proceeding in this
effort at a great pace. We r~ently worked with students from North Olmsted High
School to film an introductory description of the things the city is doing in the efforts for
recycling.
7) Next organizational meeting for the North Olmsted American Cancer Society Relay
for Life is 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 14, at the North Olmsted Recreation Center.
Contact the Community Life Services Department for more information to volunteer or
participate.
8) The Landmarks Commission will be presenting the first speaker of their 2009 speaker
series on Monday, April 13. Deneen Kassouf of the Cuyahoga County Recorders Office
will be presenting research on a number of North Olmsted's historic homes and teaching
research methods available to the public. The event begins at 7 p.m. in Council
Chambers.
9) Our Division of Youth Services is working with the Planning Department on traffic
studies for the Multi-Modal Transportation Project. Traffic counts will continue on
Saturdays.
10) Fire activity was minimal and EMS runs were down during the first quarter of 2009.
House fires and false alarms remain low as compared to this time period last year, which
is a very good trend.
2
