~. I ,
~~ North Olmsted City Council
August 7, 1980
' Page 2.

During the past week, my office contacted over fifty municipalities
throughout Ohio, gathering data on wages and benefits paid to various
Fire Departments in cities ranging in population from 10,000 to
over 1/2 million. I would like to share this information with Council
to illustrate that the total wage package for the North Olmsted Fire
Department, including primarily salary and longevity, makes the North
Olmsted Fire Department the highest-paid in Ohio, even without bonus
pay. With the additional $404 Paramedic bonus, the gap would become
even wider.
One of the most lucrative benefits paid to employees in North Olmsted
is longevity, which provides a percentage of base pay bonus, each year,
to all full-time administrative personnel based upon years of continuous
employment, as follows: 40 of base salary after 5 years; 50 of base
salary after 10 years; 60 of base salary after 15 years; 7% of base
salary after 20 years.
Most communities around Ohio have some sort of longevity plan. Some
are based upon percentage of pay for years of continuous service.
Others are straight dollar amounts based upon years of service.
By comparison, North Olmsted's longevity program pays more to employees
than any other surveyed, by a wide margin. North Olmsted's longevity
program, compared to others in Ohio, is shown through a hypothetical
employee earning $20,000 per year, without any salary increases during
the period of comparison:
NORTH OLMSTED 40 or $800 after 5 years
Columbus a flat $300 after 8 years
Toledo 2% or $400 after 5 years
Zanesville 3% or $600 after 7 years
Sandusky a flat $18 after 3 years
Ashland no lon gevity
Eastlake 10 or $200 after 2 years
Sidney 20 or $400 after 5 years
Norwalk no lon gevity
Marysville a flat $60 after 3 years
Wilmington 3% or $600 after 5 years
Akron 50 or . $1,000 afte r 5 years
Dayton a flat $50 after 5 years
Canton a flat .$105 after 3 years
Bay Village 1 1/20 or $300 af ter 3 years
Rocky River to or $200 after 5 years
Springfield 20 or $400 after 5 years
Shaker Heights a flat $500 after 5 years
Strongsville a flat $200 after 5 years
Bedford 1 1/2a or $300 af ter 5 years
Middleburg Heights a flat $125 after 3 years
Berea a flat $100 after 5 years
Brookpark a flat $250 for e ach 5 years,
Cincinnati a flat $275 after 8 years
max, .$1,000
