Council Minutes of 3-7-2017
• The Princess Ball had its largest crowd ever. It was held February 26 and over
300 tickets were sold.
• The Division of Youth and Family Services is coordinating with the North
Olmsted SITES Program, Girl Scouts and Go North Olmsted Day Initiative to
work on some improvements with the Community Gardens and Oxcart Food
Pantry. Our hope is to redo the path, prep the plots for the garden season, install
new temporary fencing and mulch around the pantry. We are looking into adding
some fruit trees on the ground.
Director of Law Gareau:
• No report, but I have a brief comment. I attended the Ohio State Bar Association
luncheon to honor attorneys who have been practicing law for an extended period
of time in the State of Ohio. One many of you know is Michael Gareau Sr., my
father, the Law Director here for 28 years. He was honored for having passed the
bar and becoming an attorney 50 years ago. He has been practicing law
continuously with either his Uncle Patrick Gareau who is the Law Director in
Westlake or Jim Dubelko. He also practiced law with my brother and myself.
However, 50 years is not the longest one honored. A woman from Westlake has
been practicing law for 65 years. I hope to live to be 65, let alone practice law for
that many years. I just wanted to share Mr. Gareau's commitment to the
community and recognize his practice of law and justice.
Finance Director Copfer:
• The GFOA newsletter had the Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) and list
of communities nationwide. I was surprised to find there were only 362
government entities nationwide that received the award. Forty are in Ohio, but
only 12 of those are cities. Most are counties and school districts. I think it's good
for our community. I've only heard positive things about the PAFR and I
appreciate Council's commitment to funding it every year.
• The Cleveland Division of Water is going to monthly bills. Starting in March
people will start receiving a bill each month. I'm sure people will get confused. If
anyone calls Council, remind them of that. Have them call customer service or if
it gets really bad Donna Murphy in Finance.
Council President Jones Chairwoman of the Committee of the Whole:
The Committee of the Whole met on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Present
were Council members Brossard, Kearney, Schumann, Williams; Mayor Kennedy and
guests.
• The purpose of the meeting was to meet and interview applicants to the Ward II
Councilperson seat to fill the term through December of 2017. Council
interviewed the following candidates: Marco Cuevas, Chris Glassburn, Pat Kelly,
Daniel Rahm and Janelle Zauner.
Councilman Kearney Chairman of the Finance Committee:
The Finance Committee met on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 6:40 p.m. Present were
committee members Kearney and Schumann; Council member Brossard; Council
2
