Council Minutes of 11-8-2017
willingness to volunteer. A motion to recommend Ms. Taylor to Council was
made by Chairwoman Hemann and seconded by Mr. Limpert. It passed 3-0.
Councilwoman Hemann made a motion to appoint Ms. Jennifer Taylor to the Arts
Commission to fill the unexpired term ending December 31, 2019. The motion was
seconded by Councilman Limpert and passed unanimously. Ms. Taylor appointed to the
Arts Commission to fill the unexpired term ending December 31, 2019 by a vote of 5-0.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
Mary Hill
5471 MacKenzie Road
Ms. Hill raised a concern about a traffic light on Lorain by MacKenzie. She stated last
year she was in an accident because someone ran a red light. She stated a month later she
had the green turn signal to turn on MacKenzie and someone from the east bound lane
crashed. She said a couple weeks ago she was turning on MacKenzie and the light turned
red. She said the two cars by her went through it and an additional two cars also went
through on the red light. She got the turn signal to onto MacKenzie and once again
someone from the east bound lane ran the red light. She thinks what's happening is
people are watching what the westbound traffic is doing instead of watching the signal
and they move when the west bound traffic moves. She thinks there should be a better
way to approach it.
Ms. Hill also said she had a concern about the number of deer living in North Olmsted.
She said a couple of days ago while she was working in her garden a big stag ran through
her yard. She said this is dangerous for drivers and people. She said yesterday she found
her tree had about three broken branches and was injured by the horns of a deer. She also
said there are evenings where there are six or more deer in the empty lot across from her
that are waiting for her to go in so they can eat in her yard. She said she understands the
state only allows the culling of a certain number of deer, but since it's not done in her
neighborhood it does not do much for her. She wants to know why the state believes we
need that many deer. She said she is forced to garden defensively because she is not
allowed to put a fence in the front yard and it is getting too expensive.
The Mayor said he would call her tomorrow regarding these issues.
Tiffany Mekeel
6109 Sherwood Drive
Ms. Mekeel said she was standing in front of Council tonight for the estimated 43,000
Americans who will die of pancreatic cancer in 2017. In 2017, pancreatic cancer will
afflict more than 53,000 Americans of which 71 % of them will die within in the first year
and 91% will die within five. As a member of the North Olmsted community for over
four years, she said she believes it is imperative to let the community know about this
important month. Ms. Mekeel said her mother was diagnosed this past July with stage
four of this horrific disease. Unfortunately, she fell in the 71 % who won't make it past
one year. This year pancreatic cancer surpassed breast cancer to become the third leading
C!
