Council Minutes of 1-16-2018
Well, Ted Williams said `that's the life being a firefighter, it sure beats being a
ballplayer, I'd rather be a firefighter.' Guys, you are here, you made it and we are
welcoming you today. The Fire Department will give you the badge you wear on
your chest, the City will give you the patch on your shoulder and your family
gave you your name. For all three of these, make everyone proud. To the families
of these new firefighters, once you have a firefighter in your family, your family
and this community become one big extended family.
• The Mayor swore in the following three police officers: Majed Abuzahrieh, Kyle
Wilson and Shane Wyatt. Chief Wagner thanked Council, the Mayor and all of
the Directors for their support. He also recognized Jeff Medves as he just retired
from the Police Department. Chief Wagner said the City goes through an
extensive background check to hire the best of the best. He said Shane and Majed
are both currently serving in the United States Military. He said they have already
graduated from the Peace Officer Academy and will go right into their four month
field training. The Chief said that Kyle will think he was in the military when he
graduates from the Academy. Chief Wagner said the department is proud to have
all three of these guys. The Chief also wanted to talk about the promotion to
Sergeant of Dave Woehrman. He said Dave has been with the department since
1996 and they had the privilege of working the same shift together. He has spent
time in the firearms program as a Taser instructor, an evidence technician and he
is ready to be a supervisor for us. He is going to do a great job.
• The Mayor thanked all the police and firefighters that attended and their support
staff. He said it is great to see even retired police and firefighters come to watch
the swearing in and you can see the sense of family here in the community. The
Mayor also thanked the families of those being hired for coming as it means a lot.
Director of Law Gareau:
• I was not able to attend the last meeting as my wife and I were celebrating our 21 sr
wedding anniversary out of town, but I wanted to wish everyone a healthy and
happy New Year in 2018 and I look forward to working with everyone here.
Bryan O'Malley came to the City in 1998 and I am happy to have him back for
the next four years working with us. Michael Gordillo has been with us as our
Prosecutor since 2005 and will be back for the next four years. Annie Kilbane has
been with the City since 2002. She worked under two Mayors and has been with
me for four years and will also be back.
• The first item I want to comment on is the State ex rel. James Connell et al. v.
City of North Olmsted et al. This is the class action flooding case. It is set for
mediation on January 19 at 10 a.m.. I'm not sure what we are going to mediate,
but we are going to give it a shot and see if we can get something taken care of.
• On Monday, we have a telephone conference for Officer Chris Fox and his
unemployment claim.
• On Thursday morning, I have a meeting scheduled with the Rocky River Court to
discuss Marsy's Law, the recently passed legislation regarding victims' rights in
criminal proceedings. I will be attending to ensure we are in compliance.
Director of Finance Copfer:
• The Finance Department is busy closing last year while beginning this year.
2
