It is the <br />intention ofthe parties to provide to said employees, salary continuation benefits when art <br />employee contracts an illness as hereinafter specified. likewise, it is the intention of the parties <br />to provide to said employee. salary continuation benefits when an employee is in while <br />responding to an emergency call, returning from in emergency call. operating at or during an <br />ernergencv call or training that replicates emeruencv situations. It is not intended that salary <br />continuation benefits be granted to emplotiees cvho incur routine injuries in the perforrrtance of <br />their duties in non -emergency situations. <br />17.1(a) In the event that a t-ull time employee ofthe North Olmsted Fire Department. <br />should become ill due to contact with a life threatening ilhuas (e.g., 1IIV, TUbcrculosis, <br />Meningitis, MRSA. C -diff; or other equally threatening illness) while on dutN. and such illness <br />has so incapacitated the employee that he temporarily is unable to work. the Dire Chief shall <br />investigate and determine whether the illness is work related and of a temporary nature. fhe F� ire <br />Chief shall then forward his finding to the Safety Director who shall determine the nature and <br />extent ofthe illness and how contracted, including the circumstances thereof, 11'after <br />consideration of the totality ofthe facts. the Safety Director determines that said disease was <br />contracted during employment and is ot'a temporary nature requiring medical leave. the Safety <br />Director may authorize the full payment ofthe employer's regular salary for a period of up to <br />ninety (90) days. <br />17. I(b) ]fan employee is injured whilearn <br />engaged in n eergencv response, an injury, <br />investigation shall be conducted by the Injury Investigation Committee (The Fire Chief, an <br />individual chosen by the Association and one ( I ) individual designated by the Satety Director). <br />Said Committee shall investigate the facts and circuiIrstances surrounding said injury and <br />forward a report to the Safety Director. File Safety Director shall determine if tyre injury is tivork <br />related and of a temporary nature. 'file Safety Director shall also determine the nature and extent <br />ofthe injury and the cause thereof, including the surrounding circumstances. If'alkr- <br />consideration ofthe totality ofthe facts determined from the investigation repo► -t and any <br />independent determination ofthe Safety Director the Safety Director determines that it is <br />appropriate to award said employee his regular pay he shall so order that pa\-mcnt be made for a <br />19 <br />
