Limits on Interrogations and Arrests <br />1. Interrogations - SROs oras participate in the questioning of a student about conduct Thar could <br />result in criminal charges only after lnloa ruing the student Of his or her Miranda rights in agc- <br />appropriatelanguage and informing the student's parent(s) or guardian(s). Parents/guardians should be <br />allowed sufficient time to arrive at school to be present for inten-ogation. <br />2. Arrests - Incidents involving public order offenses including disorderls conduct profanity. and Fighting <br />will be considered a school issue handled h_v school officials and considered as a criminal issue handled <br />by the SRO. <br />i. Building principals and the Superintendent or hisRrerelesignee shall be consulted prior lo an arrest <br />of a student when practical. <br />ii. the student's parents) or guardian(s) shall he notified of or her arrest immediately or as soon as <br />practical and in it timely manner. <br />in. Unless there is a serious and immediate threat to student, teacher, or public safety, SROs shall <br />not use physical force or restraints on students. <br />,I. Role in Critical Incidents <br />'I lie SRO will be familiar with the emergency operations manual of the North Olmsted School District. <br />During critical incidents occurring when the SRO is present. the SRO will normally act as a liaison between <br />school administration, police personnel, and other emergency resources ifpractical. <br />K. Rule in Truancy Issues <br />Truancy will he handled by 'f h <br />school personnel. e SRO will act as liaison between the school and police personnel <br />should police involvement become necessary dile to safety concerns. the SRO may assist school personnel in <br />locating any student who is truant at the request of District Administration. <br />VI. School District Res nonsihill ties <br />The North Ohnsted School District shall provide the SRO of each campus and any SRO supervisor the <br />following materials and facilities, which are deemed necessary to performance of SRO's duties: <br />1) Access to a properly lighted private office, which shall contain a telephone. a secure computer and printer, <br />which may be used for general huslnOSS purposes. <br />2) A location for files and records which can he properly locked and secured. <br />3) A desk w i lh drawers. chair , work table. ti l i ng cabinet. and of lice mppl ies. <br />4) The opportun ity l or SROs to address teachers s hoot actor i n strators and student fain it ies a bout the <br />SRO Program, goals, and objectives. <br />5) The opportunity to provide input regarding criminal justice problems relating to students. <br />6) The opportunity to address teachers and school administrators about criminal justice problems <br />relating to students during u-scrvicc workdays. <br />7) The District Emergency Operations Manual. Crisis Plan, Student I landbook/Code of Conduct and other <br />related materials as deemed appropriate. <br />9) School stall designee for referrals for counseling and other school-based and/or community -hosed <br />suppodivc services for students and families. <br />9) SROs shall respect the sensitive nature of student privacy and shall abide by all applicable <br />confidentiality, privacy policies, and applicable state and federal laws. <br />10) Encourage attendance far secondary Assistant Principals at NASRO Basic SRO training_ <br />Page 6 of 7 <br />
