near the location of the new North Olmsted Elementary School and involves a pedestrian walking in the middle
of the roadway struck by a passenger vehicle. Another serious injury happened at the Lorain Rd and Clague Rd
intersection. A bicyclist was crossing eastbound on Lorain Rd in am a rued crosswalk on a bicycle and was struck
by a passenger car when the bicyclist made a wide turn and briefly exited the crosswalk.
Existing Programs and Policies
District Bus Policies
For the North Olmsted School District, Students in grades K-8 who live more than 1.75 miles from their school
will be transported by the district. All school bus transport follows all state laws for student transportation to
safely and efficiently transport the children in North Olmsted. The citys website also provides instructional
resources about proper driving behaviors when driving with a school bus on the roadway.
North Olmsted does not offer a school bus option for the high school students. This restricts the high school
students to the option of walking, biking, and personal vehicle transport to and from school. With more than
half of the high school students living outside of the 2 -mile radius of the school, it is important to ensure the
connectivity of the walking and biking routes to provide accessibility of transport options.
School Travel Policies
The North Olmsted Middle School and Highschool provides maps to parents and caregivers regarding drop-off
and pick-up expectations to minimize traffic, especially during arrival and dismissal times. With the middle
school and high school being in the same premise, the dismissal time of the high school students are slightly
later which helps with alleviating traffic in the school ground. In the middle school, school bus riders get
dismissal priority and bus lanes are provided to ensure a smooth process of school bus drop-off or pick-up.
During the peak times of on school traffic (arrival and dismissal), students walking and biking would have to
navigate the crossing across or walking along a road with other roadway users such as cars and buses. There are
law enforcement officers helping out the vulnerable road users to ensure safety.
